Ruth Gendler ArtistCalifornia artist J. Ruth Gendler has been involved with the intersection between writing and art and interdisciplinary collaboration for much of her life. She is the author of three books which include her art work: the bestselling The Book of Qualities, the award-winning, Notes on the Need for Beauty, and the anthology, Changing Light. Her art work has been featured on the covers of several books. In 2007 Lineage Dance Company premiered Beneath the Skin, based on Qualities, at the Pasadena Arts Festival and invited Gendler onstage to draw with the dancers. A long time poet-in-the school, Gendler has taught writing and art to adults and children for twenty-five years. She posts occasional web essays on the creative process at Gendler’s paintings and prints have been exhibited nationally. Recent shows include the Commonwealth Club of San Francisco, the Normandy Park City Hall (near Seattle), the Dream Institute, Oakopolis Gallery, and the O’Hanlon Center for the Arts.
